The first book in India Holton’s Dangerous Damsels series introduces us to a world that is delightfully steampunk-esque, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. For fans of Bridgerton, this one is a must read! This book isn’t the spiciest. It’s kindof like if someone tripped and got just a dash of the good paprika in the dish they were working on, but when you do get a kick of that flavor? Whew!

Cecilia Bassingthwaite is a prim and proper English lady, raised in the Victorian era by her aunt. She is also, however, a pirate who has been raised knowing how to fly her home around England as she participates in shenanigans with the Wisteria Society (which is a bit like if a sorority did crimes professionally). As are so many great heroines of the Victorian era, she’s got a dark and tragic past, but won’t let that— or piracy— stop her from enjoying a proper tea service. Well, until the men arrive to stir the pot.
Ned Lightbourne is a man who wears many hats. Sometimes he’s an assassin, sometimes he’s a pirate who has the misfortune of having his own flying house stolen, and sometimes he’s a secret agent who is in the employ of Queen Victoria herself. No matter which role he’s occupying professionally in the moment, from the moment he lays eyes on Cecelia while on assignment (to kill/kidnap her, depending on which employer he’s answering to in the moment), he can’t help but to fall in love with the tremendously capable young woman.
When one of Ned’s employers puts the Wisteria Society at risk, Ned and Cecelia have no choice but to join forces to save the league of lady scoundrels.
We’ve got forced proximity. We’ve got enemies to lovers. We’ve got flying houses and little old ladies who will poison one another without a second thought— but will make sure their nemesis has a parasol before she expires, because sun damage is unacceptable.
